How compliance and governance can make you more efficient.
Compliance and governance can help keep you out of jail and avoid unlimited liability. But they don't have to be a burden to implement. On the contrary, they can save you time and money. Consider them, indeed, to be an opportunity for business process improvement. Here are five quick tips to help keep you covered and make your business better at the same time:
- Eliminate unnecessary steps. When considering what controls are critical, eradicate wasteful action. Keep the good. Throw out the bad. Save time and money. It's that easy.
- Reap repeatable results. Efficient processes perpetuate proficiency in best practices. Think of them as a checklist for quality assurance and ease of effort. No one has to recreate the wheel.
- Craft training tools. With written processes, training can be a breeze. A review of a concise checklist, rather than a off-the-top-of-the-head recitation of what to do, can create dramatic time savings. It also can greatly reduce the inevitable opportunity for human error that not only is a legal problem, but a business hazard.
- Plan for departure. What happens if an employee suddenly departs? You have to figure out what the employee was doing. Without documentation of defined processes, this can be a daunting and enormously time-consuming undertaking.
Make it better. Once you have a process on paper, it's really easy to refine. Different people, new or otherwise, can have different perspectives and better ideas. Fine tuning can become a treat.
